Weekly Writing Prompt — October 26, 2016 Edition

Writers:

Whoo! What a blustery day here in the Snoqualmie Valley. Really hammers home that heavy writing season is upon us. Not sure about the rest of you, but I’m kind of an outside junkie. When the weather is nice, I have a hard time keeping my butt in the chair to write.
So here we are, rain, and wind, and gray, and…time to write!
If you’re prepping for NaNo, which I encourage all of you to attempt, I posted a couple of blog posts on our Facebook page for your inspiration and organizational pleasure. Be sure to check it out. Also, the calendar for the Snoqualmie Valley Region is up on the nanowrimo.org site. Register, log in; and home with our region for all kinds of encouragement and writing opportunity. Our Municipal Liasons, Quinnleeeee and Tam Borgia are the best. I am HeroProtagonist on the site. Buddy up with your M/Ls and myself and the rest of the Snoqualmie Valley region. It’s fun. It’s productive. Hey, it’s writing!
That’s your prompt today. Get involved for National Novel Writing Month. Keep an eye on the SnoValley Writes! facebook for nano-centric articles. And plan on going to the kick off, both soft and actual.
Now your moment of Writing Zen:
“First steps are always the hardest but until they are taken the notion of progress remains only a notion and not an achievement.”

Weekly Writing Prompt — August 12, 2015 Edition

Writers!

Artist’s Date Alert:  Sketchbook Project is here in Seattle. Several of our members, including myself, participated in this. You can see it beginning tomorrow night through Saturday. Olympic Sculpture Park, 2901 Western Ave – Seattle, WA 98121, August 13: 5:00 — 8:00pm

August 14-15: 11:00 — 3:00 pm. More details here:  https://www.sketchbookproject.com/events

I also wanted to share with you that I did a little experiment this summer. I didn’t journal for nearly a month. It was terrible. My creativity was off. I was cranky. Once I started doing my morning pages again, I felt better. If you want to ground your writing life and feel the creative rush, do your morning pages. Don’t know what those are? You need to come to a writing cafe or an upcoming workshop to find out! If you’ve been good about doing morning pages, good for you! You could try your own experiment, except I would say, don’t skip more than three days, instead of three weeks. You’ll see what I mean.

Today’s prompt is about patterns. One of my favorite novels is Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. My husband just returned from a massive ten days amongst his Hacker Tribe with back-to-back conferences in Las Vegas. They talked a lot about patterns and he brought me home all these pattern cipher quizzes and the like. Also, yesterday while on my own personal artist’s date, I began to see patterns I hadn’t noticed before. Clearly the universe is speaking to me. So your prompt is about patterns. What patterns does your protagonist notice, or the antagonist notice. Do you want to wax romantic in a poem about patterns. Just take that word and run with it. Write non-stop for 30 minutes.

As a reminder our dates for workshops with their descriptions are below:

September 16: NaNoWriMo Prep Workshop 1:
Have you always thought about writing a novel but don’t know where to start? This month SnoValley Writes will discuss: How to find a topic and develop it into a plot. Where characters come from and how to get them to do what you want in your novel. How to make time to write in your already busy schedule. And how to do it all in 30 days or less.

October 17: NaNoWriMo Prep Workshop 2:  This month SnoValley Writes welcomes you to meet with us to sign up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) Meet your Snoqualmie Valley Region Municipal Liasons (MLs). Ask your questions about the NaNoWriMo website, how to plan your novel, etc. and get answers from other writers – some who are starting their 8th NaNo this year. We’re here to help you get started and give you info on local events coming in the 30 fabulous days of November!
As always the workshops are at the North Bend Library Meeting Room from 10:30 a.m. to Noon.

And now your moment of Writing Zen:

“All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability. The truth is outside of all fixed patterns.” ~Bruce Lee

Weekly Writing Prompt — Oct. 23, 2013 Edition

Sorry for the delay in delivery. It helps if you push “send.” 🙂

Writers:
I can feel the creative energy building all around us. It’s that time of year where the days grow dark so fast, we’re forced back into our writing caves and art studios. We have to create. We snuggle with books by the fire, and let our creative muses dance through our lives unfettered. Embrace the season. Create.
It has been a very busy week for SnoValley Writes! members. A workshop on Monday; a workshop on Tuesday; two writing cafes. Some of us are headed to Seattle this evening for the Lit Crawl. And tomorrow’s writing cafe right on the heels. If you’ve been unable to do these things — be sure you’re signing up for National Novel Writing Month. The kick off is Nov. 1. at Boxley’s in North Bend for the entire Snoqualmie Region. Sign up at nanowrimo.org and you’ll get even more support to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. Feel free to friend me there, I’m HeroProtagonist (ask me during a cafe how that name came to be….).
Today’s writing exercise is about finishing. For those that know my creation schedule more intimately, they know that I’m knocking on the door of finishing a weird urban fantasy novel that began — as a project during NaNoWriMo — back in 2009. I need to finish it this weekend, so I have a few days to prep for NaNoWriMo where I’m going to tackle my very first creative non-fiction piece. Having some “back up” energy, knowing that there are other folks out there “finishing” projects, too
You need to find a project — either a story that’s done that needs a home, a poem that needs revision, an outline that needs doing, a kitchen drawer that needs organizing, the special trash dump that needs doing, or even a craft or piece of visual art you need to get complete. It may be anything you’ve been avoiding that needs to get “DONE.” Make a plan to get it done before next Wednesday.
I’d love to know (either email me or comment on our blog, or post to our facebook) what you accomplished. Inspire me and the rest of the group with your stories of getting something done.
Go now. Get it done!
And now your moment of Writing Zen:
Do not plan for ventures before finishing what’s at hand.” ~Euripides

Weekly Writing Prompt — Oct. 16, 2013 Edition

20080505_duck_4_600x400Writers!

Only two weeks left until a big chunk of you decide to write away November and participate in National Novel Writing Month! Don’t know what NaNoWriMo is about? Check out their website.
For the rest that have already signed up, signed on, and been putting away freezer meals for the frantic days of making up work counts, or been creating play lists to get motivated or to write by, today’s exercise is for you. If you have signed up, be sure to home with Snoqualmie Valley region so you get all the goodness from all our fellow writers in the valley. SVW! board members, and long-time NaNo-heads and now regional Municipal Liaisons, Sheri J. Kennedy (Quinnleeeee) & Takako Wright (Tam Borgia), along with myself (aka heroprotagonist), and your other Wrimos will help you get through the month and have something successful to look back on. I personally can tell you I’ve learned something about my writing process each year I’ve done it (going on 8 now). I’m never sorry I did it. Please join us!
On Tuesday, Oct. 22 we’ll be doing more exercises on outlining. But, this is a pre-exercise, if you will.
Set aside 30 minutes for this exercise. Using a timer is encouraged, but not necessary. At the end of it you’ll have a rough outline for your book.
Each one of these steps will last about 3.5 minutes. That leaves you with a little extra on one or two steps, but not much more. The goal is to get what’s in your head out quickly. Don’t mess with it yet. That comes later. Just get it down and go forward to the next step. Stop that inner editor. Just write it down.
Step 1:  Brainstorm:  What do you want to write about. Concentrate on the first thing that pops into your head. Is it similar to anything else you’ve read by another author? If so, spin it so it’s different — the characters have some sort of different perspective (female vs. male, young vs. old, etc.). Do this until you have at least three ideas down.
Step 2:  Decide which of the ideas above you like best. Then write down as many details as possible about the idea you decided on. What happens in Act I, II, III, & IV. Don’t know what that is? Look up what a story arc is. Stop your outlining timer is necessary.
Step 3:  Once you have the rough story arc for your story, write down as much as possible that you want to include about the plot. Details that pop out of your brain, like your protagonist always carries a 9mm; or that your protagonist is a pacifist. Type or write fast.
Step 4:  Develop your characters. Who’s your protagonist? Who’s the antagonist (bad guy)? What’s the major conflict? What does your protagonist want that they can’t have? How does the antagonist keep it from the protagonist? Are there any other external or internal factors that keep the protagonist from getting what they want? (Many of those questions may have been answered in step 3, but if you missed something, cover it in this step.) Write a little bio on each of your characters, including a physical description of them, potential names (unless you have something definitely scream out from your muse), background, etc.
Step 5:  Label your paper (or screen) at least 1-10. Think of each number as a chapter and decide what happens in each chapter to the characters. Don’t spend more than three sentences in each chapter. Sentence 1:  Protagonist does this. Sentence 2:  Antagonist does this. 3. Those actions create this. Focus on the important events and write them down. You are not actually writing the chapter yet. Just jotting down key sentences and the main point of the chapter (scene, if you will).
Step 6:  Take a minute or two and read over what you have.
Step 7:  Add any more details that you want to this straw-man outline, but only those that come to you immediately as you reviewed it, until the timer runs out.
At the end of this you’ll have a rough idea on what you want to write and where it’s going.
Then come to our workshop on Oct. 22nd at the North Bend Library at 6 p.m. for more work. (You may come even if you haven’t done this exercise, but you’ll just get even more done if you do do this exercise). Please RSVP that you’re going to attend.
**********
Also, don’t forget on Monday, Oct. 21 there’s a special event being held at Boxley’s (upstairs in the meeting room), “How to publish and market your own book without going crazy,” by Stephen J. Matlock, successful author of Stars In The Texas Sky. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7. Space is limited, so get your tickets today. Contact freevalleypublishing@gmail.com for more info. The link above also has more details on the presentation.

Weekly Writing Prompt — May 29, 2013 Edition

Writers:

A big Thank-You to Takako for stepping up and facilitating last night’s critique intensive. I’m feeling a bit better, but far from well. Just hoping to kick this bug enough before tonight’s hockey game, since next to writing and farming, that is one of my passions as well. 😀 Takako did give me your feedback as far as desires for the group and I will be implementing them as more information back becomes available.
Speaking of stepping up, we need to talk about National Novel Writing Month. I know it’s only May; however, plans need to begin for November now. The forms for municipal liaison are out. I know that Takako has said she will consider continuing in her Co-ML capacity as she has the last few years; however, I will not be ML this year; nor will I be participating in NaNoWriMo. I need to focus on other things currently, especially if SnoValley Writes! is to continue and grow. However, there is a huge group within SnoValley Writes! and throughout the valley that will participate in NaNoWriMo and if you have the desire — or especially if you have not done it — I strongly encourage you to do so. So, if anyone is interested in being Co-ML, (it would be good if someone who’s already done NaNo to step up for this role) please let me know and I’ll get you all the details. A decision must be made by June 19.
Speaking of June (like my crappy transitions? Hey, I blame medicine head), we need to talk Summer Schedule. We normally take August off because that is the Library’s Book Sale and we lose our meeting room. Accordingly, I’ve scheduled all my family vacations during that time. However, there are some other challenges, too, throughout summer. We will meet on June 11. Last day of school for our school district, so get your me-time in now, right? 😀  However, June 25th I’ll be wrapped up in All-Star Baseball Schedule, which is every.freaking.night. So, I will be unavailable; however, you’re all welcome to do another critique intensive — just need a facilitator. If someone steps up, then I can let the library know that we will still be using the room. In July we are scheduled to meet the 9th and 23rd. If for any reason, I have less than 3 people coming, I will cancel those sessions. Summer tends to be rough on folks’ schedules, I understand. But, I can use those hours writing or what not, if there is no moderating to be done. 😀 Just let me know, so we can plan accordingly and I can inform the library.
Last Summer, too, our weekly writing prompts were sporadic. They become more like monthly prompts. My intent this summer is to continue the weekly communique, except for August. August is vacation from everything writing. It does not mean you need to stop your artist’s dates or morning pages (those are healthy things and I continue those as well); but, for me, I take that month off from new composition, revising, plotting, teaching…all of it.  I also tend to take three weeks around the holidays, too. It’s what works for me. It does not mean you have to follow the same path. Hopefully by then we’ll have the forum section of the web site activated (or something similar), and you all can stay connected.
As always, another way to stay connected with your fellow writers is through our Write-Ins (aka Writing Cafes) which take place Mondays (save holiday Mondays like this last week), Wednesdays and Fridays. You can always see the calendar section of our web site as a reminder.
Your prompt is to check out our web site and attend a writer’s cafe before June 11, as well as let me know your intentions for the rest of summer’s work sessions.
And now, your moment of Writing Zen:
“When we are unable to work, we can work at the work of getting ready to work. Writers can lay in supplies of papers and enticing pens, notepads that plead, ‘Please write on me.’ Painters can prepare their canvases, clean their brushes, neaten their studio space. Potters can acquire a new lump of cool clay and clear the table space where they will knead and shape it. Gentle things can be done.” ~Julia Cameron.

Weekly Writing Prompt — October 10, 2012 Edition

Writers:

Brr! I don’t want to turn on the fireplace yet; but, it’s cold today. But at least its going to be dry for a few more days. Then the rains move in.
Speaking of rains, when the weather turns this way, it’s so much easier to get into the swing of the writing thing. It’s going to rain, you may as well write. And November is the perfect month for it, because it’s National Novel Writing Month! Once again, SnoValley Writes! will be leading the charge and getting everyone excited and involved and making the month not only productive, but fun!
Kick Off:  Will be on the evening of November 1. It will inspire those that feel stuck and allow those who have already charged ahead to come out. There will be prizes, giveaways, No Plot, No Problem discussion, and connecting with your other WriMos. I will have details hopefully after today. But it will be the evening of Nov. 1 — so be sure to stay tuned.
To also put on your NaNoWriMo calendar is the evening of Nov. 17th — our regions Night of Writing Dangerously. This event will also provide a mini writing retreat. So stay tuned for details for that as well. I’ll be posting this information via the NaNoWriMo.org site, so be sure you get signed up and registered and home yourself with the Snoqualmie Valley region. I’ll be at the Black Dog on Friday for those who need help with the technical aspects of signing up. Or at our Workshop Session on Sunday.
This Sunday is our regular Workshop Session. Please RSVP if you plan on attending. We will start the session with exchanging some work for feedback. Bring a short story, one chapter of a novel, up to five pages of poems, or up to 10 pages of a screenplay for review by other members. Then we’ll dive into our exercises and other creative pursuits. Bring pen/notebook or your lappie. We’ll be working. That’s why it’s called a Workshop. 😀
There is a board meeting for SnoValley Writes! tonight at the Sawdust Cafe at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who is wanting to be involved further in the group.
Okay, enough with the housekeeping and announcements. Here’s your prompt….which you may proceed to if you’ve done your morning pages and had your artist’s date in the last week. Oh, you haven’t? Nor have you done any inspirational reading? tsk-tsk. Go do those.  When you’ve finished those, you may proceed to the other tasks.
Which I’ll give the group on Sunday. North Bend Library. 3 p.m. Be there.

Weekly Writing Prompt — Nov. 16, 2011 Edition

Wow, the middle of November. Ouch. The forecast is calling for Snow this weekend, however, all those hot little writing hands are not going to allow it to stick around much.

For those still participating in National Novel Writing Month:  Kudos! Keep at it. Even if you don’t make 50k — all the words you have are good ones. You allowed yourself, gave yourself permission to be creative. Keep it up. Don’t give up. Heck, I’m only at 8k and I’m not giving up. Today’s goal is to simply get to 10k. If you’re having trouble, I encourage you to come out to one of the write-ins and challenge yourself with your fellow WriMos and SnoValley Writes! members and do some word wars, talk out your plot, your characters. Ask any veteran of a Write-In, they will tell you they are hugely helpful. I got an extra 800 words yesterday thanks to a write-in. I doubt I would have gotten those without the support of my fellow writers. And that’s why we’re here. Support. Encouragement. Education. We help you reach new literary peaks. 😀
**********
Don’t forget SnoValley Writes! authors who were featured in Views, Voices & Verses Vol. II: Fall Into Story, will be signing copies of the anthology on Monday (Nov. 21) at Selah Gifts in Downtown North Bend (Bendigo and 3rd Street area…right next door to Carriage House). Signing begins at 6:30 p.m. Hope to see many of you there!

Still looking for a project manager to get Word Jazz organized. Anyone? Buehler? Anyone? Let me know if you’re interested. You will be fully supported by the board, but you will be leading the charge to create a successful literary event.

Still looking for a project manager to lead the Annual Writing Contest.

Today’s prompt:  So stealing this from NaNoWriMo because it’s 7 a.m. and my brain has only half a cup of coffee…
Sit down and free write and focus on you or your character observing a duck that is missing something. You decide if its literal or metaphorical. Could be a wing, an eye, it’s webbed foot. Could be your character’s best friend that represents the duck. Like I said, you decide. Would love to see what folks come up with — post on our SnoValley Writes! Facebook Page what you came up with when you’ve finished.

Writing Prompt for this week:  Go somewhere unusual — the side of the river, a park bench, steal into an empty conference room at lunch — and write, just write, freewrite, whatever comes to mind. That guy Fred whose cubicle is catty-corner from you and is constantly shuffling, the sound of the river’s current along the shore, the sound of the birds in the tree at the park. Anything. Everything. Just sit and write out of your normal writing zone. If you’ve never been to a write-in, that would qualify as well. Mimic a conversation you hear at the cafe. Incorporate it into your prose.

Weekly Writing Prompt — Nov. 2, 2011 Edition

Happy Noveling Month All!

Even if you’re not participating in NaNoWriMo (yet I highly encourage you to do so!), November is a great time to redirect and allow writing to be a priority in your life. If you’re so passionate about it you wanted to be on this email list, there’s something inside of you screaming to be fed. Feed it. Give it time to get words and stories out. Even 30 minutes a day is better than nothing. Heck, 3 minutes a day even. Scrawl a poem, scratch out a character introduction — whatever you can do. Do it.
Have to mention that last night’s Snoqualmie Valley National Novel Writing Month kick off at the Snoqualmie Brewery and Tap Room was fabulous. We even got our server to consider joining in on the noveling fun! Woot! Go Allison! Again, as I mentioned last week, there is a theme to our NaNoWriMo efforts this year here in the Valley:  30 Days, 30 Ways to Play…Writer!  So each day there is a write-in, writer’s cafe or other such event to get you focused on your writing. Give yourself permission for just this month at least.
Today’s prompt is dedicated to Sheri Kennedy, who is taking on an ambitious challenge in doing a thematic short-story collection for NaNoWriMo:
Free write for :20 on what the image speaks to you. Write as the rain. Write as the child. Write as the photographer. Write as your main character. Look deeply at the photo and make sure you don’t miss a detail.
Put it in your novel if it works. Put it in your novel even if it doesn’t work. Just get the words on the page.
And now your moment of Writing Zen:
“Write books only if you are going to say in them the things you would never dare confide to anyone.”
― Emil Cioran
P.S. Write-In tonight in Carnation at the Jin Heng restaurant beginning at 6:30 p.m., your host is Kathy Gabriel. Thursday’s Write-In is Late Night at the North Bend Bar & Grill at 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Casz will be your host. As with all of these — it’s come when you can, leave when you must. Do be prepared for some head-down writing time.

Weekly Writing Prompt — It’s NaNoWriMo Month! — 11/3/10 Edition

I’m calling this the birthday edition! And soon you’ll see why….

NaNoWriMo is 12 years old! Happy Birthday to an event that raises funds and awareness for literacy, writers and readers — young and old alike. Besides it’s just a great motivator for us.

**********

Along with yours truly, people like Dolph Lundgren, Dennis Miller and Charles Bronson have birth dates today. I see a common cord through the lives of all these people — true fighters for what they believe in. I believe in you, my writing compatriots; Charles Bronson believed in justice; Dennis Miller worked towards social justice and Dolph Lundgren apparently believes in fighting old age (dang he looks good!). So today’s writing prompt is about fighting. Write a fight scene or a court room scene or a heated arguement between lovers. Don’t stop until you’ve written more than 1,500 words. For those doing NaNo — that will get you close to your word count goal for the day. Remember to include all the senses in the scene.

**********

And now your moment of Writing Zen:

“Trends don’t mean anything to me. If I like something, I’ll do it. If I don’t, I won’t do it, and I wouldn’t care if everybody in the country mocked me.” — Dennis Miller.

**********

Write – In @ Isadora’s Friday at 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Write-In @ North Bend Library Saturday at 10 a.m.

Hope to see you there!
